We were booked in for 7pm. We arrived at the Potato Market with some time to spare, it was a lovely evening, cold and frost, real Christmas weather. We all got our skates, adults as well, some of the members were delighted to see that we were going to be on the ice as well!!
Everyone really enjoyed themselves, even those that couldn’t skate. Some of the members were so good they should be professional ice skaters. We left there and were transported to McDonalds on the Ennis Road, to feed the starving skaters. Once everyone was fed we left Limerick and were back in Kilmihil by 10:30pm. Everyone agreed that it was a great night.

We are getting good support from the parents in that there is 3 of them on every night.
We have competed in the soccer competition in Ennis, our girls won the u/18 division but were disquallified because they were under age. We had a tie dye night where Sile Coughlan and Sinead Keogh showed the girls how to tie dye t-shirts. Thanks for that girls.

The Art Classes for the elderly held in the Meadow, which were very successful before Christmas are starting again on Monday February 27th at 11.00 am. We welcome newcomers.

Clare County Council give awards each year to foster excellence in the building industry. The general assessment is based on workmanship, contribution to the environment, quality of design, originality and overall impression. This year Kilmihil Community Housing was given an award for “The Meadow” Seen here receiving the award are Mary Downes on behalf of of the Committee and Michael Leahy, (centre) the architect who designed the project.
21st November 2005:
14 of the sixteen houses are now occupied and it is hoped that all will be occupied early in the new Year.
Kilmihil Community Housing Association – The Meadow.
Background to the Project:Kilmihil Community Housing Association is a non-profit voluntary body set up in 2000 to provide housing in a safe, secure environment for the elderly of Kilmihil and surrounding areas. The Association grew out of a desire by the local development association and the parish council to provide suitable accommodation for the elderly of the parish. It is a company limited by guarantee, with charitable status and has been granted Approved Status from the Dept. of the Environment and Local Government under Section 6 of the Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1992 for the purposes of Voluntary Housing. The Association is responsible for the planning, running and up-keep of the project.
The Project: The project itself consists of 16 houses and a Communal building and is called The Meadow.
It is built on land very kindly donated by the parish and the Diocese of Killaloe. The Communal building is the nerve centre of the development where residents can meet one another and others from the wider community. Services on offer will include laundry, medical room, leisure room together with toilets and washroom facilities. The housing development though central is secluded and private from the normal activities of the village. The house design with conservatory at the front allows residents full view of the streetscape and on-going activities. All houses and communal centre are wheelchair accessible. The houses by design are for able-bodied people to help them maintain their independence while at the same time providing all necessary support to ensure that this is the case. Each unit is separate and independent. The ethos of the scheme is to avoid institutionalisation and promote integration. Older people are important to the social and cultural life of a community and we believe that this development will give them an opportunity to continue to contribute to society and to interact with village life.
Funding:
Funding for the project came from various sources. The Dept. of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government approved a loan, which covered the cost of the houses, and part funded the Communal building. This money is channelled through Clare Co. Council. The remainder of the money came from a LEADER grant, People in Need Grant and fundraising from the local community, which is on going.
Residents:
The residents will, in general be over 60 years of age, capable of living independently or with little or no help. 75% of the residents should be eligible for the Co. Council housing list, i.e. poor housing conditions, living in isolation or without family support. The other 25% of the residents are at the discretion of the Association.
Involvement of Clare Co. Council:
Clare Co. Council has worked in very close contact with the Association and has provided invaluable help and assistance over the past five years. All government monies were channelled through the Co. Council. That work still continues with the Housing Section of the Co. Council and the Association working together to ensure the best for the residents and potential residents.

The Kilmihil youth club was first founded in the early 80’s. They took part in many events and won Tops of the Towns a musical variety show and large numbers of young people became involved. At the present time there are 26 members between 13 and 16 years. They meet on Friday nights in the community centre between 9 and 10.30. They take part in Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton, Pool and cards. The leaders are Geraldine Downes, David Anglim and Rosemary Anglim. This year in cooperation with community games they have entered competition in Basketball and Volleyball. There are make up nights for the girls and outings to the cinema. However there are many more young people in the parish who could become involved and their parents also. In this age of DVDs, play stations and mobile phones it is difficult to get young people interested, but hopefully next year more will take part in the youth club.

Report from Gerry O’Neill, Chairman, Kilmihil GAA club
The Annual General Meeting of Kilmihil GAA Club will be held on Sunday 8th January 2006 at the Community Centre at 5.00 p.m.
The G.A.A. plays an important role in the life of the community and it is an essential part of our
culture and identity. For a club to function successfully it needs players, mentors, club officers, finance and the support of the community. You can provide support in different ways, by supporting our fundraising activities, by getting involved as an officer or by assisting club officers when asked.
While the GAA enjoys strong support from the community this is not fully reflected in the level of attendance at the AGM. Many supporters have the impression that the AGM is only for players and officers and may feel that they would not be welcome to attend. This is a misconception and I would like to assure you that you are welcome to attend. Kindly accept this letter as your personal invitation to attend and observe first hand exactly what is involved in running the club. Please note that only paid up members are entitled to vote at the AGM.
Review of 2005
We set out at the beginning of the year to win the Intermediate Championship under the management of Pat Garry and his fellow selectors, Michael Lineen and Gerry Downes. We reached the final but the weather conditions on the day coupled with their superior physical strength gave Ennistymon the edge. However we finished the year on a positive note in winning the U21 B Championship.
The social highlight of the year was the 25th Anniversary Dinner Dance held at the Auburn Lodge on 26`h November at which we honored the team that won our one and only Senior Championship in 1980. The U21 team were presented with their medals on the night also. ‘

Well we weren’t good enough to beat a strong Ennistymon team in fine bur near gale force conditions at Quilty. But the result was overshadowed by the horrific leg break of our wing back Thomas Coughlan. We wish him a speedy recovery. Kilmihil elected to play against the wind in the first half. They held out for 15 minutes but then Ennistymon scored 2-2 in a few minutes. The half time score was 2-5 to 0-1. In the second half Kilmihil tried hard but the accident to Thomas Coughlan held up play for 10 minutes and broke the rhythm of the game. Ennistymon scored one point in the second half but we could only manage six and five were from frees. We now have to face our fourth third out of senior ranks. Final score Ennistymon 2-6 to 0-7.
Scorers: Declan Downes 0-6, Mark O’Connell 0-1.

**********************************************************
Kilmihil Drama Group is back in action after a two year break. After the success of the 1997 production of Brothers of the Brush which they brought to the All-Ireland Finals, the group was unable to get a play together for the 1998 and the 1999 seasons. But now there is a cast together for the new 3-act season and Kilmihil Drama Group will be on the boards again in the spring of 2000.
The completion of the new community centre will be a major boost for the group. Brothers of the Brush was rehearsed in the old school in Lacken and that was not very comfortable.
Through the early nineties the group put on a wide variety of both 3-act and 1-act plays.
These included:
The Chastitute by John B. Keane.
Trumpets and Raspberries by Dario Fo.

The Clare uneven age (under 9 to 19) championships were held today in Kilnaboy. Our club had a small turnout of athletes but what we had were more very successful. Tadhg Lillis had a great win in the Boys under 11 championships. He led from the start and was never troubled. Last year’s All Ireland under 11 champion Damien Burke started the season in fine style with a good win in Boys under 13. He came under pressure with 300 metres to go but held on in to win comfortably in the end. Unfortunately we had no teams to back up these fine runners. Our only team medal was in Boys under 9 where our small men did well to finish third. The team was Pearse Lillis, Fergal Donnellan, Cillian Burke, and Rory McCloone.
* The first county Clare Cross-country championship of the season for uneven ages and Novice will be held in Kilnaboy on Sunday October 2nd 2005 at 12.00 noon.
* The West Clare Cross-Country Championships for National Schools will be held on the lands of Fergus Ryan in Aghaya on Wednesday September 28th 2005 at 12.00. This is the 9th year for this event and it has organised each year by the local club. The competition is on a parish basis among the thirteen parishes in West Clare. The Kilmihil Team is comprised of pupils from Kilmihil, Cahermurphy and Clonigulane Schools. There are 6 races for under 8, under 10 and over 10 boys and girls. There is an overall trophy for the best parish.
Kilmihil Athletic Club was founded on January 6th 1942 by Fr. Pat O’Connor who had recently arrived as the new parish curate. The club is the oldest and longest surviving club in County Clare. In the early days the club promoted athletics for young men from the parish and the surrounding areas. This has continued successfully to the present day. In the 60’s juvenile boys were catered for and in the 70’s girls competitions were added. At the moment we cater for boys and girls from under8 to veteran category.
There have been many great champions in the club. In the 40’s there was Patrick O’Dea from Lissycasey and Willie Carey from Moyasta. The great era for the club was in the 50’s and 60’s with senior cross-country winners, Morgan Walsh, Knockerra, Dan O’Halloran, Pat Kelly, Cree, and the great Pat Considine who won County, Provincial and National titles.
In 1967 a major divide occurred in athletics and Kilmihil AC decided to remain NACAI. The 70’s and early 80’s were relatively quiet for the club but at the end of the latter decade St. Michael’s Vocational school built an athletics track which has been available to the club and which provides an excellent safe training ground for athletes. In the last decade we have become one of the strongest clubs in the county and in the top 25 in the country. The O’Gorman/ McNamara trophy which is presented to the best club club in the county track championships was won in four consecutive years.
The arrival of the millennium has seen the club become part of the newly formed Athletic Association of Ireland. Club member, John Devine has been elected chairman of the Munster board and Michael Lillis becomes the first chairman of the new Clare board.
Training takes place on Tuesday and Friday nights at 7:00 p.m. at the community school grounds and all are welcome to join||11|| 1175379594|admin|Community Games News|Congratulations to Caitriona O’Gorman who came first in the U8 art competition in the County.
