Community Employment Scheme

Kilmihil Community Development (K.C.D.) sponsors a Community Employment Scheme which is now in its third year. It has a full-time supervisor and an average of 19 participants. In 1996 K.C.D. identified a number of local needs which could be addressed by this scheme. K.C.D. invited submissions from all parish organisations as to what they felt were the major needs of the community. These fell into the following categories:

The implementation of the three-year development plan for the built environment under the guidance of the Kilmihil Tidy Towns Committee. There are 69 people on the live register in Kilmihil. Most of these, at varying times, are eligible for participation in the C.E. scheme. This project has had an immense impact on the development of the local community.

Social Class Structure

The social class of all persons aged 15 and over is determined by their occupation and employment status. The social class of family dependants is derived from the social class of the parent having the highest social class. Occupational criteria provide the basis for the seven social class categories utilised in the Census of Population, but they also include farmers with different amounts of land. The Higher Professional social class (social class 1) includes farmers with 200 acres of land or more; those working between 100 and 199 acres are allocated to the Lower Professional class. The next class, Other Non-Manual includes farmers with between 50 and 99 acres and those with 30-49 acres are defined as skilled manual. Finally, the semi-skilled Manual category includes small farmers with less than 30 acres of land.
